Business fibre vs cable internet

Fibre and cable can look similar on a brochure and behave very differently on a Tuesday afternoon.

The difference is usually the upload

Fibre services are commonly symmetrical: the same capacity outbound as inbound. Cable services typically give a large download and a much smaller upload. If your site runs video meetings, cloud backups, cameras or hosted phones, that upload difference is the whole decision.

Consistency and shared capacity

Cable segments are shared with other premises in the area, so performance can dip at busy times. Dedicated fibre services are less exposed to that and are more likely to come with a service level agreement stating response and restoration targets. Ask whether the offer is best-effort or dedicated — the words on the quote matter.

Install time and construction

  • Where fibre already reaches the building, installs are often quick
  • Where it does not, construction can add weeks and change the price
  • Cable is frequently faster to activate at addresses already wired
  • Fixed wireless can bridge a gap while fibre is built
  • A quote without an activation date is not comparable to one with it

Choose on workload, not on the word fibre

A low-device office with cloud email and card payments may be served perfectly well by a good cable circuit today. A clinic transferring imaging, a studio pushing video or a multi-floor office on constant calls should hold out for symmetrical capacity. The honest answer depends on the address, and both options should be priced side by side before you decide.

(e) Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is fibre always better for business?+

Usually on upload and consistency, but not always available and not always necessary. Where both serve the address, compare upload, service level terms and activation date rather than the technology label.

What if fibre is not available at my address?+

Other commercial paths — cable or fixed wireless — often serve well, and some sites use one now with a planned move to fibre when construction reaches them. The address check tells you which is real today.

Can I get both for redundancy?+

Yes, and for revenue-critical sites it is a common design: two circuits on different physical paths with automatic failover between them.
